A World-Changing Idea for African American Entrepreneurs
As an African American entrepreneur, you know that our community is full of incredible talent and potential, ready to make a difference. But sometimes, the resources and opportunities needed to succeed can be elusive. That’s why Operation HOPE’s 1 Million Black Businesses Initiative (1MBB) is such a game-changer. Recently recognized with Fast Company’s prestigious World Changing Ideas Award in the Enduring Impact category, this groundbreaking program is empowering Black entrepreneurs like never before.
The 1MBB Initiative, a partnership between Operation HOPE and Shopify, aims to support and uplift Black entrepreneurs and business owners by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and access to resources necessary to start, scale, and grow their businesses – all at no cost. The program, which began in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, has already supported nearly 200,000 Black-owned businesses and plans to continue until 2030.
One of the most impressive aspects of 1MBB is the broad coalition of partners working together to make it a reality. In addition to Shopify, key partners include the U.S. Small Business Administration, Truist, First Horizon, Wells Fargo, the NFL, MasterCard, Comcast, iHeart Radio, Aprio, The Salvation Army, several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), churches, municipalities, and members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
Through its HOPE Inside network and the Coalition of the Willing partners, 1MBB participants gain a strategic advantage that can help them thrive in both physical locations and eCommerce. The initiative addresses common barriers to success that many Black entrepreneurs face, such as mentorship, risk tolerance, technological innovation, digital strategies, and limited access to capital.
Despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic and social unrest, research from the latest HOPE index reveals that Black entrepreneurs remain optimistic. The 1MBB initiative has demonstrated significant improvements in outcomes for those who have participated, and the Fast Company award is a testament to its impact and potential for transformative change in the African American business community.
If you’re an African American entrepreneur looking to start or grow your business, the 1MBB Initiative is an incredible opportunity to access valuable resources, network with like-minded individuals, and make a lasting impact on our community.
